Water Quality Information & Updates

Throughout the summer, the Haw River Assembly has been conducting water quality testing in and around the school. As a result, The Hawbridge School was recently notified of test results showing elevated levels of PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances).

We want to share this information with our community and let you know about the precautionary steps we are taking while we work to better understand the situation and determine the appropriate long-term response.

Effective Thursday, August 13

Precautionary Measures

  1. Alternative drinking water will be available onsite.
    We have arranged for drinking water to be brought in for students, faculty, and staff. It will be delivered and available before school begins on Thursday. We will continue to provide drinking water from an alternative source until testing confirms that the water available on-site meets applicable North Carolina drinking water standards.
  2. Drinking fountains and faucets will not be used for drinking.
    Out of an abundance of caution, we will block off all drinking fountains and clearly mark sinks, faucets, and other water sources as not for drinking until further notice.
  3. We are working with the appropriate agencies.
    We have notified our public water utility and are working with them and state officials to understand the test results, conduct appropriate follow-up testing, and determine longer-term solutions.

Our Priority

We understand that information about PFAS in drinking water can be concerning, particularly for families with children. Our priority is the health and safety of our students, faculty, and staff.

We will continue to share information as we learn more and will provide updates regarding testing, water quality, and any changes to these precautions.
