State assessments help measure student learning and fulfill North Carolina accountability requirements.
Testing requirements and schedules vary by grade level and course. Assessment results also provide useful information to students, families, and educators.

The following resource provides additional information about North Carolina’s statewide literacy initiative and support for developing strong reading skills.
Several assessments are offered during the fall to measure student readiness, provide academic benchmarks, and support planning for future learning.
North Carolina requires third-grade students to complete a reading assessment at the beginning of the school year.
North Carolina requires all tenth-grade students to participate in the PreACT assessment.
The PSAT is available as an optional assessment for eleventh-grade students. A registration fee is required.
During the winter testing period, eleventh-grade students participate in North Carolina’s statewide administration of the ACT.
North Carolina requires all eleventh-grade students to take the ACT. The assessment is usually administered in late February or early March.
Students who would like to take the ACT again outside the statewide administration may register through the ACT website and pay the required fee.
Spring assessments measure student learning near the conclusion of the academic year and fulfill state testing and accountability requirements.
Students enrolled in an Advanced Placement course through The Hawbridge School or NC Virtual Public School may take the corresponding AP exam free of charge.
The College Board establishes the date and time of each assessment. AP exams are usually administered during the first two full weeks of May. Families can review the current schedule on the College Board AP Exam Calendar.
The Hawbridge School administers state-required end-of-grade assessments to students in grades 3 through 8.
These assessments are given during the final ten instructional days of the school year. Students in all tested grades complete reading and mathematics assessments, and students in grades 5 and 8 also complete a science assessment.
The Hawbridge School administers state-required end-of-course assessments in Biology, English II, Math I, and Math III.
These assessments are given during the final five instructional days of the school year.
Beginning with the 2020–21 school year, the North Carolina State Board of Education eliminated the North Carolina Final Exam from the statewide testing program used to assess teacher performance and professional growth.

The Hawbridge School does not administer the SAT. Students who would like to take the assessment can review upcoming dates, register for an exam, and locate nearby testing centers through the College Board SAT website.
