Partnership with Alamance County Public Libraries (ACPL)

Category : ACPL Connect

The Hawbridge School and Alamance County Public Libraries (ACPL) are happy to announce a partnership that will allow students, faculty, and staff to have full access to the ACPL collections and digital media including e-books, databases and online resources.

This “ACPL Connect” account is a special library account that utilizes a student’s ID number. There is not a physical card associated with these accounts, and they are created automatically using data provided by The Hawbridge School. For more information, please see the attached ACPL Connect Welcome Letter.

Absenteeism

Category : Executive Director

Dear Hawbridge,

As you heard from your child’s teachers on back to school night, student attendance will be a point of emphasis for us this year. Let me begin by saying that we are not discouraging educational (or even recreational) travel.  However, we do want our school community to know that we miss your child when they are not here and that repeated time out of the classroom can have an impact on a student’s performance and academic growth.  Let’s begin examining this focus area with a clear definition of what chronic absenteeism is.

The organization Attendance Works outlines a clear distinction between truancy and chronic absenteeism.  The following graphic is from their website:

Hawbridge does not have a truancy problem.  Hawbridge was, however, on the verge of a chronic absenteeism problem last year.  Some faculty members believe we do suffer from chronic absenteeism.

Re-emphasizing our earlier point, we are not attempting to discourage educational or recreational travel.  We are, however, discouraging recreational travel that occurs 3-4 times a year taking a student away from school for more than two consecutive days.  Couple this amount of missed instructional time with any additional time missed due to unforeseen reasons–such as illness–and the impact can be significant.

We appreciate your attention to this important aspect of school and look forward to faithfully serving your child(ren) in the 2017-2018 school year.

A few mid-summer announcements…

Category : Executive Director

Dear Hawbridge,

I hope your child(ren) are enjoying a fun and relaxing summer.  We are preparing for the 2017-2018 school year and would like to make you aware of some happenings at Hawbridge.
Our facility is enjoying some much needed upgrades.  We have taken advantage of a Duke Energy savings program that allowed us to convert all existing lights and ballasts to a more energy efficient model.  Duke Energy also installed motion detectors in the restrooms to further conserve energy when those facilities are not in use.  We have upgraded our fire sprinkler system and made repairs to the decking off the front of the school.  Finally, the walls downstairs have received a fresh coat of paint, which has really brightened up the space.
We have also completed our staffing needs for the 2017-2018 school year and would like to make you aware of our new additions.
First, we would like to welcome Joan Love to the Hawbridge team.  Ms. Love will be an Exceptional Children’s teacher at Hawbridge.  Joan is experienced in traditional and non-traditional education settings, including charter schools.  Ms. Love received her undergraduate degree in Elementary Education from North Carolina A & T University and earned a master’s degree in special education from Elon University. In November of 2016, Joan passed her National Boards and is now a National Board Certified Teacher, a first for Hawbridge.  Joan has over 20 years of experience working with children–nearly 18 of those years spent in an elementary setting.  We are excited about bringing Joan to Hawbridge and look forward to having her experience pay dividends for all of our students.
We would also like to welcome Greg Randall to the faculty at Hawbridge.  Mr. Randall is a graduate of the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill, where he received a bachelor’s in Biology.  Greg furthered his education at the University of North Carolina-Greensboro earning a master’s of education with a focus in Biology.  Greg will be teaching 7th grade science, Biology, and Chemistry at Hawbridge.  Mr. Randall has 18 years of experience in education–as a high school biology teacher and in secondary administration.  He was also a member of the United States Air Force from 1993-1997.  Greg is going to be an excellent addition to the faculty at Hawbridge.
Finally, I would again like to remind everyone of the important dates pertaining to the start of school.  Please save the date(s) for Back-to-School Nights.  We will hold back-to-school night for grades 4-7 on Monday, August 14, 2017, from 6:00 p.m. until 7:30 p.m. Back-to-school night for grades 8-12 will be held on Tuesday, August 15, 2017, from 6:00 p.m. until 7:30 p.m.  The format will be the same as last year.  First period will start at 6:00 p.m., and you will rotate through each of your child’s classes in 10-minute intervals.  Fourth and fifth grade students will report directly to their respective classrooms at 6:00 p.m. on Monday, August 14.  Families with multiple children within those clustered grade levels can write to me if special arrangements are necessary.  The first day of school will be on August 17, 2017, and will be a full day for all students.
With warm regards,
Dr. Moles

Communication

Category : Executive Director

Hello Hawbridge,

On September 19, we transitioned from using email to using Google Groups. If you still do not have access, you may request it at: https://groups.google.com/forum/#!forum/thehawbridgeschool. Once you have access, you will be able to see past messages, as they are archived in the group.

It was a rainy week. All of our scheduled sports games and meets were cancelled. We’ll have information about rescheduling soon. In the meantime, check out our upcoming competitions at http://thehawbridgeschool.org/category/sports/.

Please continue to monitor the new website (thehawbridgeschool.org), Twitter (@hbcounselor), and Facebook (www.facebook.com/hawbridgeschool/) for continued updates on Hawbridge events.  Social media and Google Groups will be our primary communication methods.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to call or write.

Have a great weekend,

Mr. Moles
