One Update and One Reminder…

Category : Executive Director

Hello, Hawbridge.  I do hope you are well.

The update: As a follow-up to our viewing of Screenagers, parents of teens and tweens should read the following article.  Quite compelling.  I know I’m guilty.

Parents Spend As Much Time on Screens As Teenagers | TIME

The reminder: Coffee (or Tea) with the Director on Tuesday, December 13, 2016.  We will meet in the Haw River Ballroom at 8:00 a.m.  The agenda for the morning will be focused on the possible Hawbridge Expansion and an update on the addition of a 4th grade class.

I look forward to seeing you there.  Have a great weekend.

Coffee (or Tea) wth the Director

Category : Executive Director

Hello, Hawbridge.  I would like to invite any and all members of the Hawbridge community for coffee in The Hall River Ballroom on December 13, 2016 at 8:00 a.m.  This is the first in a series of talks we will be hosting.  While the topics will vary, they will always be purposeful and relate to school-wide areas of interest.

The talking points for the December discussion include:
  1. Hawbridge Expansion
    • 4th Grade
    • Status update on the possibilities of a new school
Our intent is to keep these meetings brief, in order to respect your time, but also informative.  We are hopeful many of you will attend, but understand work and home schedules may not align.  Please remember, my door is always open.  I am happy to discuss items such as these, or any other topics of interest, at any time.
We appreciate your support and look forward to these meetings.

Open House and 4th Grade

Category : Executive Director

The Hawbridge School is excited to announce the date for this year’s Open House.  Open House is a time for prospective students and families to visit Hawbridge and make a more informed decision about their intent to apply for admission for the 2017-2018 school year.  This year’s Open House will be held on December 3, 2016, from 1:00 p.m. until 3:00 p.m.  This coincides with the Saxapahaw Holiday Market.  Teachers, students and administrators will be on hand to provide tours, answer questions and promote our wonderful school.
The Hawbridge School is also pleased to announce that we will be adding a 4th grade classroom for the 2017-2018 school year.  Currently, Hawbridge serves two classes of 5th grade students.  Next year, we reduce those 5th grade sections by one and create space for the addition of a 4th grade classroom.  This change will provide our school several benefits. I will highlight two:
  1. It will enhance our ability to recruit a stable and steady population of students.  The 5th grade year is not a time in which students and families are actively seeking to transfer schools.  Many families prefer to culminate their elementary school years at the school where they currently attend.  The addition of a 4th grade will potentially attract more families to make that transition at an earlier time in their child’s educational life.
  2. It will allow current Hawbridge families more space in 6th grade to enter siblings, if they so choose.  As we all know, 6th grade is a more natural place in which to enroll a student in a new school.  Many of our families with multiple children choose to wait until the 6th grade year to enroll.  This will allow us to accommodate those families and apply the sibling preference rule more liberally.
I also want to highlight what this addition does not do:
  1. It will not increase our overall enrollment.  Hawbridge currently has 314 students enrolled in grades 5-12.  This addition would not significantly change that number due to the fact that we will be reducing the number of students enrolled in 5th grade.
  2. It does not change our overall student-to-teacher ratio.  The 4th and 5th grade class sizes will remain in-line with the class sizes in our middle and high schools.
Essentially, this change is being made to enhance the Hawbridge experience.  The addition of a 4th grade allows us to continue to keep our enrollment at a healthy place, both for academic purposes and for financial stability.  It also allows us to better serve existing families with younger children that may want to enroll their child and reduce the stress of transportation issues, and again, create more space in 6th grade for the sibling preference rule.
As always, please write or call should you have any questions.  We would certainly appreciate you sharing this announcement with friends and neighbors.  The best form of advertisement for our school is your good word.  The application for the 2017-2018 school year can be found here.  We appreciate your support and look forward to serving another year of learners at The Hawbridge School.
Best,
Mr. Moles

Transportation Survey, Screenagers, and Twitter

Category : Executive Director

Hello, Hawbridge!

Just a couple of reminders.  First, Screenagers will be playing in The Haw River Ballroom on Sunday, October 30, at 6:00 p.m.  Tickets can be purchased from our webpage or at the door.

Please don’t forget to complete the transportation survey if the proposed route applies to you.  The survey can be found here.

Finally, if you are on Twitter, you should follow our two accounts.  @hbcounselor deals with more of our academic areas and @HBStudentLife deals with the great things our students are doing in co-curricular and extra-curricular activities.

Have a great weekend.

A hodgepodge of stuff…

Category : Executive Director

Hello Hawbridge!

I trust this post finds each of you doing well.  We hope parent-teacher conferences have been productive for you and your child(ren).  We understand it is a busy, fast-paced time, but want you to know that if you need follow-up conferences, we are always willing to meet with you.  Please just let the respective teacher(s) know, and we will do our best to accommodate.

Hawbridge Expansion Update
The Board of Directors and I would like to inform the community of some recent action steps that have been taken towards the possible expansion of The Hawbridge School.  The Board has selected an architecture firm to begin exploring the possibilities of expansion, what that expansion can look like, and any subsequent next steps.  The Board has formed an expansion sub-committee, consisting of board members, faculty members, and community members.  Any next steps regarding expansion, after a feasibility report is completed, will include community forums for all members of our Hawbridge family to better understand the vision and for the sub-committee to solicit feedback on the expansion possibilities.

We would like to stress that any and all steps taken thus far are in the spirit of possibilities.  Truly no decisions have been made except to explore the possibility of an expansion and the many forms in which that expansion could take.  These are exciting times, and we look forward to working together.

Don’t forget about SCREENAGERS, October 30, 6:00 p.m., in the Hall River Ballroom.  Tickets can be purchased in advance at: thehawbridgeschool.org/event/screenagers-documentary/

The 2017-2018 school calendar was approved by the Board of Directors on Wednesday, October 19.  We will make a more formal announcement early next week, but in short, the adopted calendar is downloadable here.  There were some minor changes, based upon feedback received from the parent survey.  We value your input and try to honor it.

2017-2018 Proposed School Calendar

Category : Executive Director

Dear Hawbridge,
I hope this announcement finds each of you doing well.  I am writing to inform you, and solicit your feedback, on the proposed school calendar for the 2017-2018 school year.  As promised, we are creating this calendar much earlier than last year, making sure you have the information in a timely fashion.
You can view the proposed calendar through the announcement on Google Groups.  However, please allow me to highlight a few key areas within next year’s calendar.
  • School will begin for students on Wednesday, August 16, 2017.
  • Parent-Teacher Conferences will occur on October 19 and 20.  This is the end of the first nine weeks.
  • No school the entire week of Thanksgiving.
  • No school from December 18-January 1 for winter break.  Students will return from winter break on Tuesday, January 2, 2017.
  • Spring Break for students will be March 29-April 6, 2018.  March 29 will be a teacher workday (no school for students) due to March 28 being the end of the third nine weeks.
  • The school year will end for students on May 25, 2017.
This calendar was built with students, families and employees in mind.  Students will always be the main factor in any decision.  This calendar maximizes our instructional day and year with no planned early release/late arrival days and no weeks with less than three days of instruction.  We appreciate your support of The Hawbridge School and want to ensure we provide your most prized possession with the best education possible.

We would appreciate any and all feedback.  Please use the following link to submit your comments.  The board will approve a recommended 2017-2018 school calendar at their October 19, 2016 meeting.  All board meetings begin at 6:00 p.m. and are held in Huth Commons at The Hawbridge School.

Appreciatively,
Kenny Moles

New Computers…

Category : Executive Director

Hello, Hawbridge!  I hope the week has been good for you and your student.  I am writing this week to update you on some purchases we have made with your generous donations.  60 computers and two charging carts were delivered in the last two weeks.  These new devices are already being utilized by teachers for research, word processing and other tasks.  They have also helped launch Google Classroom for our students.  Additional devices are on the way!

These purchases would not have occurred without your generosity.  The Tools for Teaching fund, in addition to the generosity of PASTA, is what allowed these devices to be purchased.  We appreciate your donations, support of the Silent Auction, and all the other fundraising events we hold throughout the year. Charters are often on a shoestring budget while trying to ensure fiscal resources can withstand an unexpected calamity.  We are no different.  Without your financial support, we would not be able to to achieve some of the traditional or the more creative aspects of our school program.

In short, thank you, and please continue to support PASTA.
